What's the difference between a character limit and a truncation point?
The limit is the hard maximum a platform allows — go over it and the post won't publish. The truncation point is where the platform's feed cuts the text short behind a "more" link, even though the full caption is well under the limit. Both matter: one is about whether you can post it, the other is about what people actually see first.
Why does Facebook allow such a long caption?
Facebook's hard limit is over 60,000 characters, but almost nobody sees that much — the feed truncates to roughly the first 477 characters before showing "See more". Write your hook in that first stretch.
Does X (Twitter) truncate captions the same way?
No — X has a hard 280-character limit and no separate truncation behavior. If it's under 280 characters, the whole thing shows.
Are these limits guaranteed accurate?
They're based on widely-cited, current platform behavior, but platforms change these numbers without much notice. Treat this as a strong starting point, not a guarantee — if a caption is right at the edge, double-check on the platform itself before publishing.
